Gestational Diabetes Program
What is Gestational Diabetes Mellitis (GDM)?
Gestational Diabetes is a "Condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy (especially during their third trimester)". The cause of gestational diabetes remains unknown. However, it is generally accepted that during pregnancy, hormonal changes within the body reduce the lowering effect of insulin on blood glucose level. This is called insulin resistance and the blood glucose level of pregnant women are usually high.
Risks of having gestational diabetes:
-
Maternal age as 35 years old or above
-
Being overweight/obese prior to pregnancy
-
Family history of diabetes
-
Previous diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes
-
Previously given birth to large babies (weight of 4kg or above)
Gestational Diabetes
Once diagnosed, the health of mother and the baby will be affected without proper management of gestational diabetes. Poor management of blood glucose level during pregnancy may cause large babies (due to excess energy intake). Babies at birth may experience low blood glucose level and they will have higher risk of having type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, mothers with poor blood glucose control will have higher risk of having gestational diabetes on second pregnancy. They also have greater risk of having type 2 diabetes in later ages.
What could be done after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes?
Once diagnosed with gestational diabetes by doctor, it is recommended that pregnant women should consult a dietitian for dietary advice on managing blood glucose level while receiving adequate nutrients for the mother and the baby. Exercise should be done together with dietary changes for better blood glucose control. If dietary management and exercise do not help manage blood glucose level, pregnant women should consult their general practitioner immediately for early insulin injections.
