Obesity is a Disease
Being overweight or obese not only effect personal appearance, it can cause great harm to our health. We must seriously face up to the problem, as obesity is considered a chronic disease. The accumulation of excessive fat tissue in obese people is the major risk factors that lead to many chronic illnesses.
Are you really overweight?
Medically speaking, obesity means excessive fat content in the body. International studies have shown that body mass index (BMI) being too low (underweight) or too high (overweight and obesity) will be greatly increased morbidity and mortality of people. So the control of a normal BMI is an important indicator of maintaining good health.
Body Mass Index (BMI) = Weight (kg)*/ Height (m) 2
* 1 kg = 2.2 pounds
According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), Asian adult body mass index were categorized as follows:
Underweight < 18.5
Normal 18.5-22.9
Overweight 23.0-24.9
Obese ≥ 25
Morbid Obese ≥ 30
Are you “centrally” obese?
In addition, measuring waist circumference is also a simple and convenient measure of abdominal fat. If your waist circumference is too wide, it will increase your risk to cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, coronary heart disease and metabolic syndrome (diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.). So, it is very important to prevent having a “big belly”.
The Asian recommendation of waist circumference is as follows:
-
Men: less than 35.5 inches ( < 90 cm)
-
Women: less than 31.5 inches (< 80 cm)
How important is percentage of body fat?
Excessive visceral fat causes the body to release health-threatening cytokine which can lead to increased blood pressure and blood sugar. Body fat percentage can be measured by a Bioelectric Impedance Analyzer (also called a ‘body fat scale’).
Normal adult body fat percentage:
Female Male
Healthy level 21-24% 14-17%
Acceptable level 25-31% 18-25%
Overweight > 32% >25%
